Musings from about town

Yesterday, while driving home, I heard a familiar voice on the radio. A few years ago, I would listen to a local commercial station in the mornings. Part of their morning show was Chuck Knopf, who was the traffic guy and "straight man" to the other two DJ's. When the radio station was purchased by a large national broadcasting company, Chuck Knopf left--I'm not sure if it was his choice or the company's.

Anyway, I was listening to NPR on the drive home and, during the afternoon commute, they frequently break away for local news and traffic. And who else would be manning Oregon Public Broadcasting but Chuck Knopf! Admittedly, he has more vocal "spring in his step" than most Public Radio broadcasters, but it was good to hear him again.

Speaking of news, I think The Oregonian is getting very, very desperate. They've taken to sensationalist headlines for non-news. For example, this morning they lead with the magnitude 3 hurricane that did not hit Hawaii. Their headline? "Hurricanes Hawaii Style" with a picture of people sitting on lawn chairs on the beach wearing Hawaiian print shirts. Yeah, whatever....

I think there should be a rule about how long something must exist before it can claim it's existence. Let me explain....

My parents live in a town outside of Tucson and, going into the town, there is a sign saying, "Welcome to .....; Established 1991." 1991? Does that even count as a town yet? Yesterday, I was walking up to the DMV and mosied past an apartment building that had a plaque embedded in the wall right next to its Starbucks. It said, "The Essex House, 1992." You know, being an apartment building with a Starbucks that happened to be built 15 years ago does not qualify it as a historical landmark!
