When the movie Pearl Harbor came out, I went to see it with my parents--at their request. Personally, I think it was a horrible movie full of bad writing, bad acting, bad music and bad history. However, I have one very clear memory from watching that film. During the battle scene, which I found to be nothing more than revisionist history so that the film would make money in Japan, I noticed an older gentleman sitting next to me. He was probably in his 70's and probably someone's grandfather. And he was crying.
This Friday, Flight 93 opens in theaters. I won't be seeing it. I'm not going to make any statements about how I think the filmmakers are trying to exploit the horrors of September 11th or how I don't feel any person should see this movie. For me, the wound is too fresh. I remember waking up to my mother's phone call telling me to turn on the television (thanks to my "redeployment" by the Crooked E, I was sleeping in). Watching this slice of the day, knowing the fate of all those on Flight 93, would probably push me over the edge.
The film is getting good reviews and it may be quite the success at the box office. But what would I accomplish by seeing it? Bring back the nightmares that I struggled with for a year after 9/11? Drive me massive doses of dramamine before the next time I get on a plane (I'm already a white-knuckle flier!)? My memories of 9/11 don't need to be "freshened up."

I'm not sre how I feel about this movie either. We all know the ending. I worry about the families of the people on that flight. Is this movie ging to make them feel better or worse?
Hey there,
I just had to come back over and tell you I loved the rant about the "Chicks"

I'm with you on this one. I will not be seeing United 93. Unless all proceeds from the movie are going to the families of the victims I can't see this as anything but an opportunity for a movie studio to make money off a national tragedy. Plus, since we couldn't possibly know everything that went on that day, the movie is going to be wildy fictionalized, exaggerated, and dramatized. I think that's offensive to all of us and I won't support it.
Not that I've thought about it much...
